The mission of Emmanuel Center is to ransom the captive by educating and empowering at-risk youth and adults through Christian ministry so that they are elevated out of poverty and become productive citizens.
Emmanuel Center is a local, not-for-profit organization at work in Memphis for 25 years. We are an outreach ministry of Memphis Leadership Foundation.
Who we serve
The Center’s clients are residents of the 38126 ZIP Code in South Memphis – one of the poorest communities in the nation. Poverty runs rampant here, along with accompanying – and alarming – trends in drugs, school dropouts and crime.
Almost two-thirds live at or below the poverty line – including a third who scrape by at 50% of the poverty level (less than $12,000 a year for a family of four). More than half are unemployed. Less than half have graduated high school. Many don’t even leave their homes for fear of falling victim to one of the 125 documented gangs that roam the streets of Memphis.
How we serve
- Help these inspired participants with job placement
- Provide safe summer camp opportunities for youth
- Tutor children in math, science, reading and computer skills, and help them get scholarships to local private schools
- Organized Sports
- Food Distribution in cooperation with Mid-South Food Bank
- Weekly Chapel Service for students
We are inspired daily by those who defy the statistics that plague the communities in which they live.
We are proud of those who have experienced successes through our programs, and we are determined to uplift those who still face hardships. We change lives and feel blessed to provide resources to the underprivileged. We know that these resources propel people out of poverty and into greatness.
